Early Morning Encounter
The Federal trooper depicted here is mid-war period. He is out on picket duty in the early morning ground fog engaged in the lethal probing process of armies on the move. His unit has yet to be issued Spencers and his weapons and tack have seen hard use. Our trooper’s mount, though conditioned to gunfire, is startled by the shot just fired. His McClellan is rigged in march order, stripped to the bare essentials by this late in the war.
