The Revenue Cutter Harriet Lane fires a shot across the bow of the United States Mail Steamer NASHVILLE when that merchantman appeared with no colors flying near Charleston, S.C, April 12, 1861. The Harriet Lane is with credited with firing the first naval shot of the Civil War.
